Jagd Mirage Twin Tower model
E2046.com has the 1/220 (I think) Jagd Mirage currently on sale.  Even with the discount, though it still amounts to around 200 dollars, but is a nice addition to any FSS fan's collection.  I've been waiting for about a year and a half for the site to send out a new purchase order for the recasting of this awesome kit.  Finally the wait is over, as the Jagd will be available sometime around February of next year.  I can't wait.

Buying Five Star Stories
Hey guys.. nice to find some more fans of FSS on the interwebs.  I'm just wondering though, are you any of you possibly selling volumes 15-17?  I've scoured many comic stores and sites, but haven't found those volumes available anywhere.

Anyone go to or remember Comic-Con 2003?  They had a pretty good sized FSS booth, shown by Kinokuniya, that displayed so many of the mortar headds as well as fatimas.  I remember when I first came upon the booth, they had a Jagd Mirage (1/100...the largest size I think) Twin Tower version on display.  I hope that someone has seen it so you know what I am talking about!  They had a few 1/72 models, mainly of the KOG and Schpeltor as well.  That is where I bought the first half of the series.  It was too bad I couldn't afford any of the models.  I am a big fan of 1/100 and they were really expensive.  Sorry, I just wanted to post this, even though it is about something that happened a few years back.

FSS English manga
Hey all, I wanted to introduce myself..  I'm Chris, and I'm new to this community.  I absolutely love FSS and have loved it for a long time now.  I have all of the mangas in english (well, the ones that have been released so far) and a few of the art books.

I was wondering...did the people who were working on the english translations for FSS just suddenly stop, or what the heck happened??  I got up to book 26 (book 10 in the Japanese versions) and I have not been able to find anything new for this series besides an occasional art or modeling book as of late.  This frustrates me greatly.  I want to read more, but cannot read Japanese.  Oh well.

Anyone going to AX 07?
I've been a part of this community for a while, but I'm terribley shy when it comes to things like introducing myself ^_^;;

I know there isn't much going on in this community but I hope people will see this post I'm making >_<

Well, I'd like to give a formal introduction-- so, Hey everyone! I'm Gogolotus and I am crazy about FSS!!! I love it, I love it, and oh gosh I love this series so much.

I really like to cosplay, and I'm making a costume of Amaterasu for AX 07. My boyfriend okitasan is going to be Prince Ikaruga/Sarion with me :D I can't wait to wear these costumes! I'm hoping I'll be able to connect with the FSS fans out there D:

Anyways, I was wondering if any fellow FSS fans wants to have a meet up at AX? Please don't feel like you have to be cosplayed or something just because I am xD (doesn't mean that I'd be in costume at the meet up anyways) I just want to meet other fans!!! I made a thread on a FSS forum, but no one seems to be able to make it to AX this year ; _ ; I hope some people can make it to AX on this community :x

Here's a horse-choker of an essay!
The Amon Düül Connection; or “F. U. Rogner doesn’t mean what you think it does.”

Warning- I will preface this by saying that I do not claim to be the biggest expert in the world, and there may be other valid interpretations. But I'm pretty sure that I have something concrete here- otherwise, I'd not even have bothered to write it, much less post it. So there.

Here’s a little something I threw together after some digging through heaps of old records and FSS stuff. Specifically, after a few years of reading Nagano’s stuff, I began to notice that certain names kept popping up. One of these was that of Falk U Rogner- he shows up in Fool For The City, a manga he did in 1985 (as near as I can tell, inbetween L-Gaim and FSS- it was collected in a book in 1987 by Newtype) as a main character, and again in FSS. And along with Rogner, there was this thing he kept mentioning called “Amon Düül”- it showed up in L-Gaim as the alternate name of the L-Gaim Mk 2, and then it showed up in FSS on the timeline a few years ago. It was sort of a side distraction from the whole Poseidal/Ladios Sopp thing (it eventually became clear that if he’d maybe once planned to continue L-Gaim with FSS, he ditched that plan very early on, but that is another story…) but it still bugged me every time I’d dig out FSS and re-read it.
Sometime in the early 90’s, I ran into a friend who was a bit of a stoner and the meaning of “Amon Düül” was made clear- it was a German space rock band! Obviously, Nagano was fond of them, and took the name. Considering that he dropped the names of bands all the time, it seemed pretty obvious. I didn’t think anything more of it. And then I went and bought some Amon Düül (specifically- Amon Düül 2; the band split in two early in its birth and the first part faded out of existence shortly afterwards) and saw this list of the personnel:

• Peter Leopold - drums/percussion
• Chris Karrer- guitar/sax/vocals
John Wienzierl - guitar/bass/sax/vocals
• Lothar Meid - keyboards/vocals
• Shrat - violin/percussion/vocals
Falk U. Rogner - bass/keyboards
• Dave Anderson - bass
Renate Knaup-Kroetenschwanz - drums/percussion/tambourine/vocals
• Dieter Serfas - drums/percussion
• Danny Secundus Fichelscher - drums

It hit me that there was something pretty cool in that list. Of this bag of German space-rockers, three of the names are of interest. Let’s start with…

Falk U. Rogner: The most obvious of them all. Except for the fact that the “U” in his name stands for “Ulrich” and it stands for “Ugentrig” in Nagano’s work, I’m not sure how it could be said to be anything but a direct tribute. As far as I can tell, the katakana sequence is not otherwise a loanword and has no meaning in and of itself. He makes his appearance first in Fool For The City, the “machine child” of the supercomputer “Daughter” (sound familiar, anyone?)

John Wienzierl: sounds a bit like “Jhon Weinziel”, doesn’t it?

Renate Knaup-Kroetenschwanz: That last bit of the name reminds me of another Mirage Knight, namely Sharie Landers Krotenschwanz. I’ll admit I’m not the biggest expert- but I do know there’s room in the katakana to argue that it is supposed to sound like the last name of name of the Amon Düül singer…

The other names don’t seem to have any real relation to anything I’ve yet seen in FFTC or FSS, so I won’t stick to this point any further.

Other connections- for starters, there’s the fact that the mysterious “AD era” in the timeline was revealed at least once to be the “Amon Düül Century”, complete with umlauts! Specifically, the timeline in the Japanese volume 6, entry for 5000 AD. This isn’t the first time he’s used the name outright, either; the L-Gaim Mk 2 is referred to in at least one of the show’s “bibles” as the “Amon Düül Stack” (again, umlauts included.) But it doesn’t stop there- based on this, the kana reading of name for the Super Empire itself sounds a lot (to me, anyway) like “Phallus Dei” and “Kannan” combined. “Phallus Dei” is the name of an album, and “Kannan” is one of their songs. It might be a bit of a stretch- but it makes a lot more sense to me than the other readings/interpretations I’ve seen.

However, as a general note to those who think the idea that he’d name his characters after members of an obscure space-rock band is crazy… this is the same guy who named a God’s Knight “Panhead Minneapolis” (“Panhead” is a type of Harley Davidson cylinder head) and named an entire manga “Fool For The City” after a Foghat song (he even included the lyrics and pictures of the album cover in case there were any doubts in the audience as to what he was referring to! And as another bit of name trivia- one of the little technical asides in FFTC explains what a Harley “Knucklehead” is. ) Not to mention the occasional Utah Saints poster/graffito that pops up on various walls in “Traffics” and the “Wax Trax” bar where some of the action occurred… I know I haven’t exhausted the music references in Nagano’s works- but I wasn’t really trying to. The point I’m trying to make here is that Nagano has a long precedent of being an incurable fanboy for his favorite groups, and thus the “Amon Düül Connection” makes a lot of sense in the light of this.

Hi guys
I have a questions like this, I often see the books Tales of Joker on japanese auction sites, and I was wondering what they were.
And I'm looking for FSS manga books in English from vol 12 up, is there any place to get it? Or is there anyone here wanting to sell them let me know.

An initiate
If my understanding is right, FSS was created in 1986 (the same year I was born in); only, this nascent manga interest is crushed by an oblivious Ottawan salesmanship of Japanimation. Chapters (big-box book store) doesn't carry it, in spite of the "out-of stock" tags on their website. So, what about the internet (Ebay doesn't cut it)?

Seeing the film isn't enough!

Musical References in Five Star Stories
As many fans of FSS know Nagano has inserted a ton of musical references into the manga, from character and motorheadd names, to places, groups, etc… So has anyone tried to put together a master list of references?

I spot allot of them, but I know there has to be even more that I am not familiar with that I over look. I would like to try and build a list of references, if anyone wants to post the ones they are familiar with, or point me to list that have already been done, it would be a great help.

New in town, so I just thought I'd say 'hi'. Been following FSS since the first English volumes came out ever so long ago and am waiting impatiently for some new ones. My favorite character is Dougulus Kaien and my computer is InterCity. And for some shameless self-promotion, I would add that I have FSS wallpapers on my site here. Some of them are pretty old, but a few aren't half-bad. I think. Anyway, pleased to meet you all!

An attempt to get things moving...
Here's a little attempt to get some discussion moving- A topical question!
Namely: In FSS, what is your least favorite MH design- and why?
As for me- I'll go first by saying that the FSS version of the Auge never lit my fire- I dislike the swoopy active veils on the shoulder, as well as the wastebasket-shaped head. The entire package just looks to me like a bunch of junk glued to a starved Mirage machine. The KOG 2 doesn't impress me either, what with the Lisa Simpson starhead stuck on in place of the original design and lack of Buster Rock. But the Eleshis really bugs me, mainly because it has NO HEELS. Nagano may claim that it has super-duper cat-like balance or suchlike- but no matter what kind of ninja-voodoo nonsense he drapes over it, it still looks dumb to me...

Ed Gomez' Five Star Stories RPG

I found the files I had for his game and I've posted them to my own domain. I checked Gomez' original site for his homebrew game and it is still gone. I did not have every file and I cannot remember what he did not yet finish (most of the bioware section is not available) at the time I got the files. At any rate, here is the link:

FSS Homebrew RPG

There used to be a homebrew FSS RPG which was posted online. It no longer seems to be around any longer and I'm thankful I have the HTML files for the RPG as it was at the time. The creator stopped short of doing mortar heads and any of the mecha.

I'm a bit out of the loop...does anybody know about the RPG and if the person who made it ever did expand into the mecha before the site went away?

I'm still taking notes from the Manga for my FSS shrine and I figured some people here might be interested. I've only done up to the end of volume three (book eight)and the content is still sketchy but here it is. There are some spoilers. I'm sure there are some errors as well.
